When Pulse FM joined Amplify South Africa, the station was just two and a half years old and still finding its footing. While audience interest was growing, the biggest challenge lay in sales and marketing. Like many young community broadcasters, Pulse FM struggled to convert listenership into sustainable revenue.
Through Amplify South Africa’s mentorship, the station began refining its programming and thematic focus to better serve both audiences and clients. A renewed emphasis on local news strengthened editorial relevance, while operational improvements brought greater structure to the organisation. With Amplify’s support, Pulse FM appointed accountants, formalised financial tracking and adopted a more disciplined approach to planning and reporting. These changes helped the team build confidence in their brand and sharpen their strategic direction.
One of the most significant shifts has been in revenue generation. Moving beyond traditional advertising, Pulse FM introduced integrated sales packages that include social media promotion and sponsored radio segments. This diversified approach has attracted major brands such as Volkswagen and Food Lover’s Market, marking an important milestone for the station’s commercial growth.
Audience engagement has also improved. With guidance from Amplify South Africa, Pulse FM appointed a social media manager, strengthening its digital presence and deepening listener connection. The launch of the Pulse Business Breakfast further expanded the station’s footprint, creating a platform where local businesses can connect while supporting Pulse FM’s sustainability goals. The 2026 edition of the event will be sponsored by Impala Rustenburg, reflecting growing confidence from corporate partners.
For Pulse FM, the journey has underscored the importance of strong management systems and clearly defined roles. Building a stable sales team remains a challenge, but the station has learned that resilience, structure and belief in its mission are essential.
Today, Pulse FM stands as an example of how community radio can evolve through strategy, mentorship and innovation. With Amplify South Africa’s support, the station is strengthening its foundation and building a future where local voices are not only heard, but sustained.
