Politically Aweh: Building a sustainable home for creative political journalism

For Politically Aweh, growth has meant finding the balance between creativity and sustainability.

Launched to make politics more accessible, engaging and relevant to young South Africans, Politically Aweh has built a loyal audience through its distinctive blend of journalism, explainers and digital storytelling. In a crowded media environment, the organization has carved out a unique space by translating complex political issues into content that is informative, entertaining and easy to understand.

As its audience grew, so did the need for stronger systems behind the scenes.

One of the organisation’s biggest challenges was ensuring that its production processes could keep pace with demand while maintaining quality. Support from Amplify South Africa helped create the stability needed to invest in people and systems. Politically Aweh expanded its team with strategic hires, including a line producer, editorial producer and post-production supervisor. These additions strengthened planning, improved internal communication and created a more efficient production pipeline.

The impact was immediate. Clearer team roles, improved workflows and daily coordination meetings increased accountability and reduced production bottlenecks. With stronger editorial management and better planning, the team was able to build a content buffer, reducing last-minute pressures and ensuring more consistent publishing schedules.

At the same time, the organization focused on strengthening its financial foundations.

Rather than relying solely on short-term funding opportunities, Politically Aweh invested in better financial forecasting, stronger budgeting systems and a more strategic approach to fundraising. The organisation also adapted its production model, introducing complementary podcast content and making greater use of cost-effective production methods to maximise resources without compromising quality.

A dedicated fundraising support role further strengthened sustainability efforts, allowing the editorial team to focus on content creation while maintaining a steady pipeline of funding opportunities and donor relationships.

Improved financial stability has translated directly into stronger journalism.

The organization has expanded its reach, increased audience engagement and strengthened its visibility within South Africa’s media landscape. By 2025, Politically Aweh had grown its audience to more than 53,000 followers across platforms and generated over 2.5 million views. A dedicated social media manager has helped accelerate this growth while deepening engagement with audiences online.

The increased capacity has also enabled more ambitious reporting. Coverage of the Cape Town housing crisis gained significant traction and contributed to wider public conversations on the issue, demonstrating the organization’s ability to shape debate and influence news agendas. Partnerships with fellow media organizations, content creators and influencers have further expanded its reach and credibility.

Perhaps most importantly, greater stability has improved the wellbeing of the team itself. The organization has been able to move away from short-term freelance arrangements and offer longer-term contracts, increasing job security and creating a stronger foundation for growth. Over the course of the program, Politically Aweh expanded from the equivalent of two full-time staff members to a team of seven.

For Politically Aweh, one lesson stands above all others: creativity and sustainability cannot be separated. Great journalism requires strong systems, reliable funding and the capacity to support the people producing it. Building those foundations may happen behind the scenes, but they are essential to ensuring that independent media can continue to innovate, grow and serve audiences for years to come.
