MambaOnline: Building a Sustainable Future for LGBTQ+ Media

For more than two decades, MambaOnline has been a trusted voice for South Africa’s LGBTQ+ community. What began as a passion project, run single-handedly by its founder Luiz De Barros since inception, has evolved into a strategically managed, future-facing media organization. With support from Amplify South Africa, MambaOnline has entered a new phase of growth focused on sustainability, innovation, and stronger community connection.

One of the biggest milestones has been the appointment of a full-time Managing Editor, made possible through Amplify’s support. After years of being run almost single-handedly, MambaOnline now benefits from shared leadership that has improved editorial consistency, planning and overall output. The addition of a business coach has also been transformative, providing guidance on proposals, budgets and long-term strategy. Together, these steps have shifted MambaOnline from a passion-driven initiative to a more structured and resilient organization.

Digital transformation has been another cornerstone of this progress. A faster, re-designed website has improved user experience, especially for mobile readers, while a rebranded newsletter and new WhatsApp channel are deepening audience relationships. These platforms allow MambaOnline to communicate directly with readers in digital spaces it owns, reducing dependence on social media algorithms.

Financially, the team has moved away from relying solely on banner advertising and is now focused on partner-supported editorial content, donor partnerships and plans for events and merchandising. This diversified approach has improved financial stability and expanded opportunities for growth.

Partnerships with Pride organizations and community initiatives have strengthened visibility, credibility and impact. MambaOnline is now recognized not only as a publication, but as a vital part of South Africa’s LGBTQ+ ecosystem.

With Amplify South Africa’s mentorship and support, MambaOnline is proving that inclusive, ethical and community-driven journalism can be both impactful and sustainable. Its evolution signals a new chapter for LGBTQ+ media in South Africa, one built on resilience, innovation and pride.
