Looking back on our work last year, I think we can be proud that we helped strengthen scores of independent media. In 2019, we were again facing a world where press freedom was in decline.

The key metrics include:

  • In 2019, the MDIF portfolio included 42 media companies spread across 28 countries employing 4,472 media workers, 48.1% of them women.
  • Last year, we invested $55.2 million in 10 media companies across 10 countries, four of them being new to our portfolio.
  • We ended December 31, 2019 with more than $115 million total assets under management.
  • At the end of 2019, 90.5 % of our investments were in countries where press freedom is limited and 83.3% in countries perceived as struggling with corruption problems.
  • 54.8% of MDIF-supported media organizations were recognized with awards. We counted 55 honours and accolades in 2019.
