With a 24/7 television channel, a digital portal and a newsroom that has become the benchmark for investigative reporting across the Western Balkans, Insajder is the gold standard of investigative journalism in Serbia.
Nearly a decade after MDIF made its first investment in Insajder, the formal lending relationship between the companies has come to a successful conclusion though the partnership remains as strong as ever. This marks an important milestone for both organizations and provides a way forward for other independent media in the region aiming to build robust, independent businesses.
MDIF first invested in Insajder in 2017. A second loan followed to support the launch of the Insajder Media Group and a cable television channel in 2021. Now broadcast across Serbia’s major distribution networks, the Insajder TV channel represents a new chapter for an organization that has long operated at the intersection of journalistic integrity and personal risk.
Insajder’s journey tells the story of how unflinching editorial integrity backed by stable investment can pave the way for a robust, independent media business. The Insajder began broadcasting in 2004, founded by journalist Brankica Stanković and producer Miodrag Čvorović — who are today also the owners of Insajder Media Group. From the outset, the mission was to hold power to account in an environment where most media chose silence. Over the years, Insajder’s investigations have exposed organized crime networks behind the assassination of Prime Minister Zoran Đinđić, dismantled the customs mafia and brought to light the ties between political power, business and organized violence that defined post-conflict Serbia.
“It has been an honour to have supported Insajder on this part of their journey,” said Harlan Mandel, MDIF’s CEO. “Seeing the company build a credible multi-media brand without veering away from its journalistic integrity is a remarkable story of editorial independence and business acumen in a media environment where independence is genuinely hard-won. Supporting businesses like Insajder on their road to success is why MDIF exists.”
For Insajder, the value of the partnership has extended beyond capital. MDIF’s backing at critical moments provided not only financial support, but something harder to quantify – recognition from an international institution that the editorial principles Insajder had always insisted upon were worth defending.
“What MDIF’s support meant at crucial moments was not only financial, but also a sense that our insistence on the principles and values we stand for has been recognized and acknowledged — independently, the way we always thought it should be,” said Ms Stanković, Editor-in-Chief and founder of the company. “We do not see this as an end, but as confirmation of a successful partnership that has delivered excellent results and provides a strong foundation for the plans ahead.”
Two organizations, one mission and a decade of independent journalism on Serbia’s most difficult terrain. In a region where independent media continue to operate under sustained political and financial pressure, the combination of editorial integrity and mission-driven financial backing is a credible way forward. For the dozens of independent newsrooms across the Western Balkans still carving out space to report freely, Insajder’s trajectory offers a model and a source of hope for the future.
