Daily Maverick bagged African Digital Media Award for its Maverick Citizen membership community and for its Covid-19 coverage in 2021.

The International News Media Association has named Daily Maverick among the finalists for the Global Media Awards. Daily Maverick was nominated for Best Idea to Encourage Reader Engagement, for its thriving webinar series, and Best Use of Print, for its surprise launch of a weekly print edition DM168.

El Búho, Peru

National Journalism Award (2021)

El Búho was part of a team that produced “The Pandemic Records”, winner of Peru's National Journalism Award in the Regional category. El Búho was also a finalist in this category with two other entries: a report on femicide and a documentary on deaths related to Covid-19.

El Faro, El Salvador

Gabo Award (2021)

“Unforgivable,” a short documentary produced by El Faro, won numerous awards, including the Gabo Award 2021, but also the Best of the Festival Award at Palm Springs International Film Festival Shortfest and the Best Short Documentary Award at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA), and became the first Salvadoran film qualified to compete for an Oscar nomination.

Ortega y Gasset Journalism Award (2021)

Isabela Ponce, co-founder of the GK, won the Best Story or Journalistic Investigation award for her report Women who won against the desert in the Ortega y Gasset Journalism Awards. The reporting describes the struggle of four women in a semi-desert area of ​​Ecuador to bring water to their crops.

Amazon Smbhav Award (2021)

Founder and Director of Josh Talks Supriya Paul received an Amazon Smbhav Award in the category Women Entrepreneur of the Year that focuses on empowering women entrepreneurs in India to achieve significant growth.

The One World Media Award (2021)

Mail & Guardian received Digital Media Award at the One World Media Awards for their project the Continent, their new weekly publication that brings together the best news writing on Africa.

Thomson Foundation Young Journalist Award (2021)

Kai Hui Wong, a journalist at Malaysiakini, was the first Malaysian to win the Thomson Foundation Young Journalist Award.

Malaysiakini won awards at the annual Malaysian Press Institute - Petronas Journalism Awards in "Best Multimedia Journalism" and the "Investigative Reporting Excellence Award" categories.

Journalism Awards (2021)

Petit Press, publisher of SME and more than 35 other titles and news portals, scooped four prizes at the Journalism Awards in the categories of Investigative and Analytical Contribution, Interview, Solutions Journalism and Open Society Award. The company’s team received a total of 14 nominations.

Rappler, Philippines

Nobel Peace Prize (2021)

Maria Ressa, CEO and co-founder of Rappler was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2021. Ressa was named as co-winner with Russian journalist Dmitry Muratov from Novaja Gazeta. The journalists were recognised for their “efforts to safeguard freedom of expression, which is a precondition for democracy and lasting peace”.

Vijesti, Montenegro

Best small business manager award (2021)

Marijana Bojanic, CEO of Vijesti and its sister media company TV VIjesti, was named best small business manager by the Association of Managers of Montenegro, the country’s most prestigious business awards.

elPeriódico de Guatemala, Guatemala

King of Spain International Journalism Award (2021)

After 25 years of championing transparency and accountability in Guatemala, the daily El Periódico was awarded the King of Spain International Journalism Award for Outstanding Media in Ibero-America. The jury agreed on the value of the “tireless work of reporting and investigative journalism for which its director and team have suffered attacks, persecutions, smear campaigns and even commercial blockades”.
