Since financing our first digital startup in December 2011, MDIF startup and early-stage investments include the following:
KataData (Indonesia) is a start-up analytical news and research portal providing economic and business news and investigations. The portal builds on Indonesia’s massive growth in internet, mobile and social media usage, as well as the country’s powerful economic growth, providing a clearing house for economic and financial information.
Through satellite data broadcasting, Outernet (USA) is able to bypass censorship, ensure privacy, and offer a universally-accessible information service at no cost to global citizens. It’s the modern version of shortwave radio, or BitTorrent from space, broadcasting offline web content, aiming to put a library in every home and a bookshelf in every pocket.
Mic (USA) is a news and debate platform for millennials by millennials. Founded in 2011 as PolicyMic, it reaches over 4 million people per month. With a highly-engaged audience of young digital influencers, Mic is the internet’s most popular platform for this generation to debate major social, cultural, and political issues.
PortalKBR (Indonesia) is a spin-off of MDIF-client KBR68H, Indonesia’s only independent radio news agency, which provides news and information programming to more than 25 million people. PortalKBR draws on content from the radio news agency’s 900-member radio network, creating a powerful and unique portal for local news across the archipelago.
